Connection Methods | Luna 5.3 and Later
In Luna Display 5.3, the way you view how your devices are connected has changed. Now, you can see your connection type in the Connection Options box at the top right of the Luna Primary Menu. If you're not sure how your devices are connected, this guide will help you check.
Where to Find Connection Options
On your main Mac, open the Luna app and look at the top right of the window. You’ll see a drop-down menu labeled Connection Options. This is where you can choose between Peer-to-Peer and Wi-Fi if you're using a wireless connection.
If you're using a cable like USB, Ethernet, or Thunderbolt, you won’t need to select anything from this menu. The connection will appear automatically once your Mac recognizes the cable.
Here’s what the menu looks like:
Peer-to-Peer Connection
Peer-to-Peer is available in Luna Display version 5.3 or later. It works when you’re connecting:
- A Mac to an iPad
- One Mac to another Mac
- Peer-to-Peer is not supported on Windows
You’ll need:
- macOS 10.15 or later on both Macs
- iPadOS 15 or later on your iPad
If your devices are using Peer-to-Peer, the connection menu will look like this:
Wi-Fi Connection
Wi-Fi works on all supported Macs, PC's, and iPads, no matter the model or software version. If you aren't using a cable and don't see Peer-to-Peer listed, Luna will default to Wi-Fi.
A Wi-Fi connection looks like this in the menu:
USB Connection
Which USB cables work with Luna | How to use USB or other cables
USB works for connecting a Mac to an iPad, or a Mac to another Mac if both devices support it. This is only available in Luna version 5.3 or later.
You’ll need:
- macOS 10.15 or later on both devices
- A supported USB cable
When connected by USB, the menu will show:
Thunderbolt Connection
How to use USB, Ethernet, or Thunderbolt
Thunderbolt is supported when connecting one Mac or a PC to a Mac.
If the connection is working, it will look like this:
Ethernet Connection
How to use USB, Ethernet, or Thunderbolt
Ethernet is another option for connecting Mac or PC to Mac.
A successful Ethernet connection will look like this:
- Sometimes USB and Thunderbolt may show up as each other in the menu. As long as a cable connection is showing, it should still work normally.
- If your devices aren’t connecting the way you expect, restart both devices, try a different cable, and complete a Luna Factory Reset.
- If you’re using Ethernet or Thunderbolt and it isn’t working, follow this guide: Troubleshooting Ethernet and Thunderbolt
